What is Kundli matching?
Kundli matching (Kundli Milan, Vivaha Milan or Guna Milan) is the traditional Vedic method of assessing marriage compatibility by comparing two birth charts. The best-known part is Ashta Koota: eight factors (kootas), mostly based on the Moon sign and nakshatra of each partner, scored out of 36 points.
Kundli matching gives you the Guna Milan score and a koota-by-koota report. Love compatibility is a lighter reading of how two people relate emotionally and mentally.
The eight kootas of Guna Milan
| Koota | Points | What it compares |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual temperament and outlook |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Tara | 3 | Birth-star compatibility and well-being |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental compatibility (friendship of Moon-sign lords) |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Relative Moon signs: family welfare and prosperity |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny |
How to read the score
Many astrologers treat 18 out of 36 as the minimum for a recommended match, and higher scores as more favourable. The total is only part of the picture: astrologers also look at Nadi and Bhakoot doshas, Mangal Dosha in both charts, and the strength of the 7th house. Treat the score as one input to a conversation, not a verdict.
