What is a Kundli?

A Kundli, also called a Janma Kundli or Janam Patri, is your Vedic birth chart. It records the sign rising on the eastern horizon (your ascendant, or Lagna) and the positions of the nine grahas at the exact moment and place of your birth. Each of the 12 houses of the chart represents an area of life, and Vedic astrologers read the chart through the signs, planets and houses together.

Astronath draws the chart in the North Indian style, in which the houses stay fixed and the signs move. The first house is the top centre diamond. The South Indian style fixes the signs instead; both show the same information.

What you need

• Date of birth.
• Time of birth, as exact as possible. The ascendant changes roughly every two hours, and divisional charts change faster.
• Place of birth, which sets the latitude, longitude and time zone.
